Category: Chrome Era (1939-present)
The Chrome Era, beginning around 1939 and continuing to the present day, represents the most modern era and is characterized by the introduction of color photographs and high-quality printing techniques that produce glossy, vibrant images. Known as “chrome” postcards due to their shiny finish, they have become a staple in souvenir shops and a popular medium for personal and promotional communication.
Eastman Kodak’s development of Kodachrome film in the 1930s revolutionized color photography. This technology enabled the production of postcards with high-quality color images.
While the era technically continues today, the dominance of digital communication and social media has reduced the prevalence of physical postcards. However, physical cards remain popular as collectibles and souvenirs and continue to be produced for special occasions, tourist destinations, and promotional purposes.
