Heisen Building, Chicago, Ill.
Built in 1911 by architect Fred V. Prather, the 22-story Heisen Building is now called the Transportation Building and is located at 608 S. Dearborn St. C.C. Heisen was known as a pioneer in office building construction. The structure cost $3 million to build (around $96.8 million in 2024 dollars). There were issues during construction, including getting telephone companies to install telephone service due to labor union disputes and riots at the time. The building’s tenants included many printing companies, influencing the name of the neighborhood, Printer’s Row. It was converted to a rental building in 1980 and a condo building in 1996 with mixed-use space on the first floor.
