Category: Divided Back Era (1907-1915)

The Divided Back Era, lasting from 1907 to 1915, introduced a significant change in postcard design, allowing for a clear separation between the message and the address on the back of the card. This innovation greatly enhanced the functionality and popularity of postcards.

In 1907, the U.S. Postal Service, followed by many other countries, changed regulations to permit a divided back on postcards. The convenience of having a dedicated space for messages led to an explosion in the use of postcards for personal and business communication. Postcards became a favored method for sending brief notes, holiday greetings, and marketing messages.

The era began to wane around 1915, partly due to the onset of World War I, which disrupted international mail and the postcard industry. The war also led to changes in public sentiment and communication habits.
